A cross between a telephone interview and a face-to-face interview, video interviewing via the internet, like video conferencing, is becoming increasingly popular. You could be doing it from home or a recruitment agency office. Whichever, treat it the same as a face-to-face meeting but keep in mind some of the shortcomings of webcam images:
● Dress smartly, even if you are doing it from home.
● Clear away foreground and background clutter that might intrude into the shot and distract the interviewer.
● Prepare as fully as you would for any other interview.
● Beware of patterns and stripes on clothing – they can produce interference patterns on screen that can be distracting.
● If you are at home, make sure that you won’t be disturbed.
● Be aware that there is usually a slight time-lag between broadcasting and receiving signals. Don’t jump in to fill what seem to be gaps in the conversation.
● Image and sound are not always perfect, so speak a little more slowly and clearly than normal – you don’t need to take it to extremes.
● Similarly, keep hand gestures and other movements to a minimum – waving your hands around will look odd on-screen.
● Remember to smile, just like you would in a face-to-face interview and make appropriate ‘eye contact’ by looking into the camera lens.
